Another design principle is contrast. Contrast is what attracts the reader's attention. Contrasting elements can show the reader what elements are more important on the page.

Establish a focal point on your webpage. When a reader goes to your website, they should immediately be drawn to this element. An example of a focal point would be a graphic banner at the top of the page. Make it large and make it stand out. Throughout the remainder of your webpage, contrast will establish a hierarchy, showing the reader what the next important element is, and so on.

Contrast can be established with color, size, font, texture and more. The general rule is that if you want something to stand out, don't just make it a little different, you should make it very different.
